What’s the Difference Between a Golf Cart and a Street-Legal LSV in Florida?

Sunshine, palm trees, and the open path ahead — living in Ocala or The Villages practically begs for a golf cart ride. But before you zip off into your next Florida adventure, there's one big decision to make: Golf Cart or LSV?

They might look alike at first glance, but under Florida law, these two vehicles live in totally different lanes (literally and legally). Let’s break it down — no legal jargon, just real answers.

🛺 What Is a Golf Cart?

Think laid-back. Golf carts are ideal for cruising around gated communities, golf courses, farms and private roads. They’re easy to drive, simple to use, and perfect for short-distance fun.

Quick Facts:

Max Speed: 20 mph
Where You Can Drive: Private communities, golf paths, and certain designated roads
No license, registration, or insurance required
Typically no seat belts, turn signals, or headlights (though we can upgrade that!)

JB Tip: These are your go-to for casual, low-key neighborhood living.

🚘 What Is a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV)?

Now we’re talking about the street-savvy sibling. LSVs look a lot like golf carts — but they’re built for more. They’re federally recognized motor vehicles with added safety features, and they can hit the real roads (up to 35 mph zones).

LSV Checklist:

Max Speed: 25 mph
Legal on public roads posted at 35 mph or less
Must have: seat belts, mirrors, brake lights, turn signals, windshield, headlights, reflectors, VIN
Requires a driver’s license, registration, and insurance

JB Reminder: LSV = More freedom, more places to go. Great for downtown Ocala, The Villages crossings, or adventuring outside of your neighborhood.

⚖️ Golf Cart vs. LSV: What’s the Best Fit for You?

Feature	Golf Cart	Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV)
Max Speed	20 mph	25 mph
Road Use	Private roads only	Public roads ≤ 35 mph
Driver’s License	Not required	Required
Registration & Insurance	Not required	Required
Safety Features	Optional	Required
Best For	Gated communities, golf courses	Local errands, events, real roads

🎯 Final Thoughts: Which One’s Right for You?

Live in a gated neighborhood with slow streets? Golf cart = easy win.
Want to visit friends across town or head into downtown? LSV is your ticket.
Looking for more safety features for family rides? LSV’s got you covered.

At JB Golf Carts, we’ll help you figure out what fits your lifestyle best — and if you go the LSV route, we take care of all the tag and titling processes for you!
